I was bit with the travel bug at a young age.  My father was from Denmark and my mother from Scotland, so I spent many years as a child living in Scotland and Denmark until my family moved to Washington State. Growing up in Europe, travelling at a...

Enjoying the Icelandic Cold and Beauty

In February of 2010 I was able to experience a trip to Iceland with other travel agents. We flew on Icelandic Air and stayed at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Reykjavik.

The international airport is in Keflavik. Once you arrive you can purchase a transfer voucher at the airport that will take you into the city or your hotel. My hotel offered shuttles throughout the day that would drop you off downtown and pick up at certain times again. It is a beautiful city and very easy to get around with friendly people. There are many things to do.

I went caving one day. All dressed up for the cold and wearing a miner’s helmet with lights we descended into caves and had a lot of crawling to do. Huge icicles were hanging from the low ceilings, so you had to be careful not to run into them! We saw lots of skeletal remains in the caves, mainly sheep which probably fell into the chasms.

One night we took a bus tour out into the wide open spaces to see the Northern Lights.

A highlight of the trip was the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa. The Blue Lagoon is one of the 25 Wonders of the World, a fabulous experience and should not be missed. There are many spa amenity choices, dining options, and the Lagoon Bar that serves you in the water. The Blue Lagoon does require pre-booking for your visit.

We took a partial trip around the island and saw many beautiful waterfalls. I recommend that visitors rent a car and tour the complete island. Iceland’s dramatic landscape includes volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields. Massive glaciers are protected in Iceland’s National Parks. Surrounded by the North Atlantic and Norwegian Sea, the fresh seafood was marvelous.
